About Banaras Hindu University
Nestled in the holy city of Varanasi, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) stands as an internationally reputed temple of learning. Founded in 1916 by the visionary nationalist leader Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, with the support of figures like Dr. Annie Besant, the university was established under the B.H.U. Act of 1915. It played a stellar role in India’s independence movement and has grown into one of the nation's largest and most prestigious central universities. Its sprawling 1300-acre main campus is an architectural marvel, featuring well- maintained roads, extensive greenery, a historic airfield, and a temple. A second 2700-acre campus is also being developed in Barkachha.
BHU is a virtual universe of knowledge, comprising 6 institutes, 14 faculties, and 144 departments spanning humanities, social sciences, technology, medicine, science, and the arts. It includes 4 interdisciplinary centers, a women's college, and 3 schools, fostering a rich, integrative academic environment. The university is also home to specialized research centers, a renowned museum (Bharat Kala Bhavan), a multibed hospital, and extensive facilities for sports and hobbies. With a diverse community of about 15,000 students, including many from abroad, and over 9,500 staff members, BHU continues to be a beacon of intellect, culture, and global integration.
