About The Department of Physics
The Department of Physics, Banaras Hindu University, established in 1916, is one of India’s most prestigious centres of physics education and research. It offers B.Sc. (>1000 students), M.Sc. (~225 students), and Ph.D. (~178 students) programmes, supported by 42 faculty members and a dynamic team of newly recruited young professors. Over the years, the department has produced numerous awardees of prestigious honours such as the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Padma Shri, FRS, and fellowships of national and international academies. Research spans condensed matter physics, spectroscopy, nuclear physics, astrophysics, biophysics, quantum information, nanoscience, and multifunctional materials, contributing to both fundamental advances and technological innovations. The department maintains an impressive h-index of ~116, with ~175 publications annually and ~23 average citations. Equipped with state-of-the-art TEM, SEM, XRD, AFM, VSM, Raman, and fluorescence spectrometers, the Centralized Instrumentation Facility generates significant revenue while supporting interdisciplinary work. Active national and international collaborations further strengthen its position as a hub for multi-functional materials research and innovation.
